First and Forever are "writing emo songs so you don't have to" and their first single, 'Chicago' is proof that they're doing a damn good job of it.
A band's first release is something special, it's their first real mark on the world and it sets the scene for their future in the music world. With 'Chicago' they've already set standards high with a catchy tune and a sound which brings feelings of nostalgia for early 2000's emo/pop-punk music which made so many modern fans fall in love with the scene - including myself.
When listening the first thing to catch my attention was the tone of the vocals which reminded me of listening to Mayday Parade and early All Time Low music for the first time. There's that special something that screams 'youth' and the rawness of it makes it sound almost untouched and down to earth. Somehow it's polished but keeps the personal charm of a recording a band would make in their garage or bedroom, which is as much a compliment to the production team as it is to the band.
The skill shown in the instrumentation is fantastic. The dramatic, high energy drumming has some incredible parts which sound almost intricate, and it is complimented by (and compliments) the guitars. The guitar element is high energy and exudes emotion perfectly suited to the lyrics; there's a sense of frustration and angst in the fast, passionate strumming. It has that all important human sound while giving you something you can dance to.
Then there's these melodies which hit higher notes sounding almost like an alarm ringing in your head, giving insight to the thoughts ringing around the head of the song's protagonist - it's effective as an emotive tool while still being pleasant to listen to. These embellishments give a special twinkle through the track which makes it stand out from your average emo/punk tune.
'Chicago' reminds me of the songs which made me fall in love with the scene. In listening I'm suddenly twelve years old and discovering new and exciting sounds for the first time in my bedroom. This unique nostalgia is something I didn't think I'd feel again, making me grateful for 'First and Forever' and eager to hear what they have in store for us next.
