"This song is about everyone telling you what they think is best for you, and in your mind you ethically agree with them because it logically, it makes sense, but your heart is telling you something else. Deep down you know there is a greater potential in yourself."
- Lenny Sadowsky
East Rockaway, New York is home to Boxer, a band of four who came together at an open mic night at The Cup, Wantagh and began to create meaningful music with themes of self-acceptance and tackling subjects such as the internal battles we face and the expectations those around us have for us.
Their latest release 'Principle and Heart' talks about the battle of head vs heart when it comes to deciding who you want to be and how you spend your time on Earth. This song stuck a chord with me, because I like many others have struggled between choosing what I love to do and what is sensible, expected, and logical.
It feels like the song is being played right there in the room with you. The instruments have that natural vibration and warmth that comes from listening to music live with the smoothness of a well mixed recording. The immersion into the sound makes it feel more personal, so when the lyrics hit you, they hit you harder because there's such an intimacy in the atmosphere being set.
This truly is an uplifting song that gets better with every listen. At first the rhythm sounded like the plodding along of day to day life, just going through each day doing what you need to do to make it through to the next day but as I kept listening, it became something different.
It began to build into this golden soundtrack to climb through to reach my goals. The shimmering sound of the cymbals meeting with the stunning melodies of guitars felt like shooting stars rising through the day to day and spreading light and stardust as it went by. I found the more I repeated the lyrics to myself, the more I walked to the beat of this song, the better I felt about myself.
Principal and Heart is a warm friend offering words of comfort and encouragement to those who need it. I’m grateful I was given the chance to talk about this track because it’s truly special. It earned it’s place in my playlist and in my heart.
